Poland ranks 6th in the global cybersecurity ranking

Poland has secured the 6th position in the cybersecurity ranking according to The Cyber Defense Index 2022/23 published by the “MIT Technology Review” – a prestigious magazine issued since 1899 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We have surpassed countries such as Japan, China, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The Cyber Defense Index is a global compilation of the top 20 economies in the world (mainly members of the G20 forum, excluding Russia and including Poland), considering resources and capabilities in the field of cybersecurity. The ranking assessed the extent to which individual countries implemented practices to prevent cyberattacks and the extent to which local regulations supported actions in this area. Data largely originated from international institutions’ resources and a global survey conducted among executive management responsible for cybersecurity in their organizations. The CDI assessment considered four aspects: critical infrastructure, cybersecurity resources, organizational capabilities, regulations, and legal environment in this area. Poland received an overall rating of 6.91 in this ranking, with its cybersecurity resources receiving the highest score of 7.34 points.

Australia claimed the top spot in the ranking with a score of 7.83, having actively built a publicly accessible secure infrastructure in recent years. The Netherlands secured the second position with a score of 7.61, which is not surprising considering The Hague is known as a European hub for cybersecurity, housing the headquarters of institutions responsible for NATO and Europol cybersecurity. Geopolitical factors played a crucial role in South Korea taking the third position, and Poland achieving a high rank. Both countries were recognized for effectively repelling attacks from their neighbors – North Korea and Russia. Poland was also acknowledged for the actions undertaken by the Military Cyber Defense Component Command, such as providing support to Ukraine and contributing to the creation of international regulations governing cooperation in cybersecurity.

As emphasized by the director of the NASK institute (Scientific and Academic Computer Network) – Wojciech Pawlak – Poland’s high position in the MIT ranking demonstrates that the actions of Polish institutions contribute to building the image of Poland as a strong and resilient country against contemporary cyber threats.
